"ONAM"-The Biggest Carnival of Kerala

Late August or early September we can some high-spirited celebrations in South India. People in the southern Indian coastal state Kerala celebrate the state festival "ONAM" with ten days of fasting, songs, boat races, dance and merriment.

                       

The Origin of ‘’ONAM’’:
The Onam or Thiruonam usually held in late august or early September for 10 days originated in Kerala as a celebration to remember the golden rule of King Mahabali, a mythical king who ruled over kerala. People recall Onam as the sacrifice of the great King, his true devotion to God,his inspiration, his great work his human pride and his ultimate redemption.
However, there is an alternate concept and theory which talks of founding Kerala by Parasurama again in incarnation of Vishnu. It tells onam as the day on which Parasurama created from the Sea-Bed by throwing his battle-axe into the water.

The ONAM Tradition:

On the occasion of Onam people lay a flower carpet, traditionally called ‘Pookalam’,in front of their home to welcome King and mounds representing Mahabali and Vishnu are placed in the courtyards.



The Activities performed to Celebrate ONAM:
People perform various activities to celebrate ONAM, like Snake boat races, Onapottan, Kaazhchakkula, Puli Kali, Kaikottikali and other traditional rituals.
